Making a Pallet Ready for Transport
Before shipping freight on pallets, it is important to ensure that the goods are secured to avoid items becoming dislodged during transportation process. Boxes and bulky items can be strapped down so they don’t come off causing injury or damage. The type and weight of the goods being transported will determine the type of strapping you will need. Outpak Resources sells a range of strapping from PP (polypropylene), typically used around cartons, to PET (polyester) which is more suitable to secure palletised loads and finally steel strapping, designed to withstand the most vigorous handling.
Securing Your Load With Strapping
Tie down the pallet by feeding the strapping under the pallet and over the top. Our PET Strapping Green Embossed may be adequate. Join the ends together by layering the two ends and placing a buckle or seal, for example the PET Strapping Serrated Open Seal, over both layers, ensuring that the two ends are sitting flush on top of each other. Attach a Heavy Band Poly Strapping Tensioner to one end of the strap and then the other. Move the handle back and forth to tension the strap. To fasten the seal, put the Poly Strapping Crimper firmly over the clip and in a scissor motion push the two handles of the crimper towards each other. This will ensure than when you cut the strap that the strapping remains in place.
Protecting Your Load
Consider a Pallet Bag as almost indispensable to help keep the contents of the pallet clean and of course to stop them from getting wet in bad weather. Outpak Resources sells a range of materials to protect goods being stored and transported on pallets, for example a Pallet Sheet Cardboard to line the pallet before loading the goods on to it, and a Waterproof Pallet Top Cover which is placed over the top once the pallet has been loaded.
Securing and Protecting Your Load in One Go
Pallet wrap can be a two in one solution in that it both fixes the products to the pallet and at the same time protects it. The Cast Hand Pallet Wrap 4kg, for example goes over and around the pallet and its load, making it one unit. Outpak Resources advises that this may not be a secure solution for all loads and for some palletised loads shrink wrap may not necessarily remove the need for individual strapping.
Tools to Make Your Strapping and Pallet Wrapping Easier
Tying a pallet down and securing boxes together by hand can be hard work. Outpak Resources sells tools to make the job easier and quicker. Dispensers such as the Mobile PET Strapping Dispenser and the Mobile Poly Strapping Dispenser are invaluable when you regularly have many pallets to secure. A simple Pallet Wrap Dispenser – Hand Held makes wrapping your pallet a much easier task. A Steel Strap Cutter is also required for pallets requiring steel strapping. You will also need your tensioner handy to ensure your load is completely secure and ready to move.
